Spinel is a rare mineral with a rich palette of shades, it can be transparent or opaque. It has high hardness and glassy luster, with an octahedral shape.
Spinel stones have adorned the Monomakh's Cap and the Wittelsbach Crown, although it was previously believed to be rubies. The most famous deposits are found in Thailand, Vietnam, India, and Australia. Valuable red specimens are found in Myanmar, while blue gems are extracted in Sri Lanka.
The stone is quite hard, scoring 7.5-8 on the Mohs scale.
The mineral is fragile, easily damaged when struck against a hard surface.
The crystals have a glassy luster, sometimes exhibiting asterism and fluorescence.
